  1. Oriole 9 Revisited

    February 28, 2011 by Nina

After I reviewed Oriole 9, I received an email from the owners who wanted me to give them another try and sent me a generous gift card. I appreciate a restaurant that cares so much about their customers. I took my parents there for brunch and noticed a difference right away between this experience and my last in that the restaurant was emptier and the brunch crowd was mostly locals, rather than angry NYC people. This was due to the fact that we went during the week rather than the weekend. So the atmosphere was much more pleasant, as was our waiter. My parents ordered the Salmon on Greens special and I ordered an Omelet with Confit of Duck and Broccoli Rabe. Both, but especially the Salmon, were beautifully presented. With the Salmon came roasted tomatoes which looked so delicious that I immediately took a bite of one, but was disappointed to find it was cold. The Salmon was comparable to that of the Wegman’s Food Bar, which is good for the price ($14), but a bit too moist. The only complaint that I had about my dish is that it was not well seasoned, but they gave a generous amount of duck, which was impressive. Again, the restaurant wasn’t too well heated, but the space must be difficult to heat. Overall, I would say that they have made excellent use of the space, with interesting artwork, drapes, and communal tables. The food tastes fresh, but a pit plain for my taste. I would definitely recommend going during the week and avoiding the weekend scene if possible. If you’re in Woodstock, go here—it’s worth the price.

Hint: The Chai is interesting, but make sure to ask for it extra-hot. If you’ve never been to India (where they soak the fresh leaves in goat’s milk), then it’s probably the best Chai you’ll ever have!

  2. Bread Alone

    February 28, 2011 by Nina

I want to start out by saying I am not a fan of Bread Alone; as far as I’m concerned the only good thing about this café is that it is locally owned. I have never found the people working there to be pleasant, nor the food to be worth the price. The bread is sold in over 50 places from Albany to NYC, so it’s pretty popular. The pastries are always old, but I used to like the chocolate torte. However, this time when I had it, it was not very good. I think the biggest problem is how overpriced the food is.

  3. Pizza Paul’s

    February 28, 2011 by Nina

So in Geneseo, there are two rival pizza places, Mia’s and Paul’s that are right across the street from one another. Everyone prefers Mia’s. But Julian and I decided to order from Paul’s because they have more selection (more than just pizza). He got a personal pizza and I got a salad. I was extremely impressed by my salad (a make-your-own), which was quite good and in a toasted tomato basil tortilla. I will definitely order from here again.

  4. The Breakfast Place

    February 28, 2011 by Nina

Julian and I looked very out of place in this diner-style breakfast place. I ordered the Cajun Eggs (Homefries, Onions, Eggs, Mushrooms, topped with a slice of American Cheese). My dish was all out of a can, but very reasonably priced. To be honest, I would never go here again, but it was fun. If you’re looking for a cheap breakfast at a local joint, go here.

  5. The Owl House

    February 18, 2011 by Nina

I took Julian to The Owl House over the weekend. We had the Sweet Potato Fries with blue cheese as an appetizer. The fries were a bit soggier than I usually like, but the melted blue cheese was great. I had the Matty’s Moustache (Warm Brie, Apple, Pear, Red Onion, Baby Arugula, Housemade Dijon on Grilled Sourdough) and Julian had the Lentil Burger (Housemade Lentil Burger, Tomato, Red Onion, Sprouts, Half Sour Pickles, Roasted Garlic Vegenaise on an Onion Roll). Both of us were a little disappointed with our entrees. I think the problem with the lentil burger was that it was pretty dry. But overall, it was average for a vegetarian restaurant.
