On our way from Savannah to Asheville, we stopped in Columbia, SC to get a late lunch. We had been joking about going to Maurice’s BBQ (there were many signs for it on the highway), and actually accidentally ended up going there. The interior is decorated with a family portrait and gun combination hanging above a mantle, with other country-style décor. Julian and I shared the Brisket Special (comes with Cole Slaw, Hush Puppies, and French Fries), Onion Rings, and Mac-and-Cheese. Everything came in paper baskets. The food was as expected—good but not overwhelming.
It turns out the owner, Maurice, has quite the history. After South Carolina finally removed the confederate flag from its capitol dome, he insisted on flying the flag in front of his restaurants until a public uproar of customers claimed he was a pro-slavery racist. Wal-mart then boycotted their line of BBQ sauces and he lost 98% of his wholesale business. His nine locations no longer hoist the flag, but it was inside this particular restaurant. If this information bothers you, don’t support his business.
