  1. In a Pickle

    July 16, 2011 by Nina

This outside-of-Boston brunch spot was packed, and for good reason. They had more amazing options that I think I’ve ever seen for Brunch. Julian ordered the Carmel Crunch French Toast and I the Cookie Dough Pancakes. Both were phenomenal. Whenever I get chocolate chip pancakes, I eat all the pieces with chocolate chips and leave the rest. With these, I didn’t need to do that. The cookie dough was melted into the pancakes in the most delectable way. My favorite pancakes ever. I can’t imagine anything being bad here. The decor is a bit odd (as you can see from my photos), but it’s fun. I would highly recommend taking the trip out here when in the Boston area.

  2. The Upper Crust

    July 8, 2011 by Nina

This is our third year coming to Boston for the fourth of July. Usually we stay in Aloft hotel, but since we are trying to save money for our big trip, we couchsurfed—something we’ve done a few times before. When we arrived in the afternoon, we stopped at the farmer’s market, which is mostly produce, and walked around the harbor area—called North End as we have now learned—and decided to rent bikes. We rented a tandem bike for four hours ($50). At first it was really scary because you have to both be in sync, but we got the hang of it and it was so much fun. We rode along the water to Cambridge and then around Beacon Hill (one of our dream places-to-fantasize-about-living). We stopped at The Upper Crust for a slice to tide us over mid-ride before dinner. We’ve been here before—a tiny restaurant that has a slice of the day or plain sold by the slice. We got the plain (because the slice of the day was not vegetarian) and sat on the bench in front and devoured it. It’s not a great place to go for a sit-down meal, but it’s great pizza, and is fun for a picnic (the park is only a block away).

Hint: They have a “slice of the day” that is usually wonderful.

  3. Rabia’s

    July 7, 2011 by Nina

We then returned the tandem bikes and walked around what we call “little Italy,” but what is actually called The North End, until we found a restaurant I had the best Filet Mignon in ever last time. It’s surrounded by many other (very similar) Italian restaurants and the famous Mike’s Pastry—which always has a line around the block. On one side is a bar and on the other, a sit-down restaurant with faux grapes hanging on the ceiling to give the feeling of traditional Italian food. I ordered the seafood special (Lobster and Seafood Ravioli) and Julian ordered the Apple Ravioli with Fig. I must say that mine was only okay, which is too bad because it’s really expensive. But Julian’s was out of this world, and so unique (I have personally never seen apple ravioli anywhere else).

  4. Mike’s Pastry

    July 6, 2011 by Nina

We woke up early in the morning with the sole mission to get to Mike’s Pastry before the line formed around the block—and succeeded! We got there at 9:30 (they open at 8am) and got ourselves a delicious chocolate chip cannoli. I really wanted to not like it. I tried and tried. Because you see I don’t like places that have a huge hype and lines around the block—how can food possibly live up to such standards that cause people to wait for an hour? Well apparently they can.  I was in food heaven eating this cannoli.

  5. Modern Pastry

    July 6, 2011 by Nina

We tried Modern Pastry across the street to compare—because some people on Urbanspoon said it was just as good—but in the cramped, overheated shop, we were horribly disappointed. Though Modern’s are filled-to-order unlike Mike’s (which impressed Julian), they were nothing in comparison. Not even worth trying. Needless to say, we got another cannoli from Mike’s at the end of the day.
