  1. City Bakery

    December 9, 2011 by Nina

The City Bakery is celebrating its 20th anniversary, but you would never know. The decor is so modern that they must have had a serious renovation recently. Julian said they are famous for their Hot Chocolate, which comes with a homemade marshmallow and Pretzel Croissants. So naturally, we had one of each. I found that the hot chocolate was way to rich for me (we could only handle two sips each), and there is no way you could finish the whole mug without feeling sick. I noticed that you can order a shot (only the pros know this secret). I thought, Pretzel Croissants? Sounds kind of weird. SO GOOD. Genius, really. You have to try them.

  2. Cafe Le Perche

    November 29, 2011 by Nina

This New York Times reviewed cafe has become a hot spot in Hudson. A town once famous for antiquing, has become much more. With Warren street being the chic part of town, with antique shops, excellent restaurants, galleries, and modern furniture stores, Hudson is the Chelsea of the Hudson Valley. And just like NYC, you turn down the wrong street and you are in a completely different neighborhood. Of course because Cafe Le Perche just got written up it was packed and they literally ran out of every pastry (my parents had recommended the almond croissants) and most of the bread, so my friend and I split the Baguette with Homemade Jam, which literally was an entire baguette, so for the price it seemed like a pretty good deal. The jam was blueberry and quite scrumptious. We also had a Coffee and Iced Tea. My mom had raved about the coffee. I didn’t think it was particularly outstanding, but I’m sure their lattes are wonderful. The decor is so sweet, and the woman behind the counter wearing sixties makeup and a bow in her hair made the atmosphere feel like you had flown to France. There is also lovely patio seating, and you can get a tour of the kitchen by the baker herself!

  3. Bread Alone

    November 27, 2011 by Nina

I’ve hated Bread Alone for a while. As a kid, my dad and I would hangout with our friends in Woodstock, and our only options at the time (now there are so many restaurants) were Bread Alone and Maria’s. As a kid I was an extremely picky eater and hated “healthy food,” these days my reasons for disliking Bread Alone are a bit different. Over the years I’ve tried many things: bagels, sandwiches, scones, fruit and granola parfait, oatmeal, flourless chocolate cake, apple strudel and torte, baguettes, brownie, and many other pastries. I think the worst thing I’ve had is the brownie, which was like a powdered piece of cardboard. The baguettes really are good, and the oatmeal is well worth the price, but other than that, the place is so overpriced. I always feel ripped off.

  4. Uncommon Grounds

    November 17, 2011 by Nina

Julian woke me up at 6am Saturday and told me we were going to Saratoga Springs. I was so excited (and half asleep). We arrived before 8am and sat ourselves in this cafe so that I could work on my Grad School applications. We had a lovely pot of tea (only $2.50!), and stayed for two hours. Then we explored Saratoga a bit, and came back, had another pot of tea and worked some more. The first time, the man who took our order was super nice and helpful, but the second time, a woman, was a lot less kind. They get incredibly busy, with a line almost out the door. Good thing there were 10 people working behind the counter (I counted).

  5. Barista’s Espresso Cafe

    November 15, 2011 by Nina

I was so disappointed when Gloria Jean’s moved out of this location, and thought that nothing could compare. Until I tried the Cookies and Cream Frappuccino here. Absolutely heavenly. And I must say that it was better than at Monkey Joe (which really was terrible). Barista’s was creamy and sweet, but also has coffee in it. It was nicely presented-with drizzle on the inside of the cup and whipped cream on top. A wonderful place to go when in the mall, which I must admit is never for me. I wish they would open a location on broadway!
