  1. Savonna’s

    December 12, 2011 by Nina

It’s hard for me to enjoy a place like Savonna’s when I much prefer a restaurant that has homemade food that is much cheaper, like Mint, which is right next door. The pasta lunch special includes heaping portions of traditional foods like bolognese and lasagna, which some people just love. Dinners are expensive, but lunch is reasonable (still, around the same price of dinner at Mint). I had the Butternut Squash Ravioli and my mom had the Savonna Salad. I liked the salad (it had pears, strawberries, and chicken in it) and the ravioli was very good (it came with walnuts and warm cheese), but was literally swimming in butter. I’ve also had the Fig and Ricotta Pizza, which is definitely the best thing on the menu. Overall, the food is good, but not outstanding and there are definitely better places to eat in the Rondout, but it’s a nice place to go for a meal with the family.

  2. Armadillo

    December 10, 2011 by Nina

My co-worker also works at the Armadillo and has been recommending it to me for forever. But it was only this week that I finally got to try the food. I finally have a favorite Guacamole. I think the thing that bothers me most is when there is so much lime that it’s like you’re eating a spreadable lime goo. This was not at all that. It tasted fresh and you could taste the avocado, onions, and spices. We shared the Goat Cheese and Vegetable Quesadilla as our appetizer, which I loved. I had forgotten how in love with goat cheese I am. I had the Steak Burrito, and was so impressed by how much steak was actually inside (and it was excellent meat). The food here is so fresh and delicious that they are a tough competition for Mole Mole.  Both restaurants have the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. We had such a good time here and were both so pleased with our meals.

  3. Kyoto Sushi

    November 30, 2011 by Nina

My co-workers and I ordered lunch the other day from Kyoto, and I had the Lunch Box Speical: Choice C (Salmon Teriyaki, California Roll, and Shumai). I thought it was pretty good. Of course, nothing compares to Miyas, but it was better than a lot of sushi I’ve had. I love the idea of a box like this with a lot of different options, as I think is popular in Japanese culture in general. My salmon was very good, and I liked the sauce and onions it came with. I would definitely get food from here again.

Update: Julian and I went here for dinner last night and had a great time. We had the Crispy Potato Roll, Sweet Potato Roll (Yes the waitress laughed at us for this), Sun Dried Tomato Roll, and Green Tea Ice Cream (they were out of Mochi). I loved the softness of the sweet potato roll and the crunchiness of the potato roll; I wish they would combine the two to make an ultimate roll. We were both really happy with our meal.

  4. King’s Valley Diner

    November 28, 2011 by Nina

King’s Diner is definitely one my favorite diners. I once had a Chicken Cordon Bleu that I thought was great. This time I had Chocolate Chip Pancakes with extra chocolate chips, and usually when I say that at restaurants they only put a tiny bit more inside, but not this time. There must have been more chocolate chips than pancake batter, which is just how I like my pancakes. YUM. Good job King’s Valley Diner.

  5. B3

    November 20, 2011 by Nina

I work down the street from this restaurant, and was so excited and surprised when Julian told me that a “really nice burger restaurant opened on Broadway.” Inside, there is a high tin ceiling, wooden tables, and paintings by a local artist on the walls. The owner cleverly put a strip over the windows so that while you are dining you cannot see outside (smart move). When Julian and I went for the first time, the waiter opened the door for us, and was extremely kind, enthusiastic, and attentive. I had a really hard time deciding what to order because there were so many great options (always a good sign). This was one of those times when I really wanted a new restaurant to be good, and to do well. To me it seems crazy to open a nice restaurant on Broadway, but the owner has high hopes about this “up and coming neighborhood.” By now, I have eaten there four times. Obviously, the food does not disappoint. Nor does the owner, who is absolutely fabulous. Each time I come in, he says hi to me, which really brightens my day.

But now about the delicious food. My favorite dishes are the following, in this order: the Thai-BBQ Pulled Pork Slider (a fabulous blend of sweet and spicy, crunchy and tender); Filet Mignon Slider with Gorgonzola, Caramelized Onions, and Peppercorn Cream (I don’t like blue cheese, but still think this is heavenly); Duck Confit Slider with Spaghetti Squash, Roasted Raisins, and Apple Cider-Chocolate Sauce (how could you possibly go wrong?); Southern Fried Chicken on a Buttermilk Biscuit with Sausage Gravy (takes me back to Savannah). The “Kung Pao” Calamari Appetizer is easily the best Calamari I’ve had (yes, better than Fez or Mint — two of my favorite restaurants). The Fig-Jam and Prosciutto Slider would be on my tops’ list if I liked blue cheese, because I worked around it and loved it, so try this if you do like blue cheese (or just pick around it like I did). I can’t wait to try the Wild Board “Philly Cheesesteak” with Truffled Cream Cheese and Porcini Reduction. In case you can’t already tell, this is one of my absolute favorite restaurants. In fact, I’ll be there tonight.
