  1. El Toro

    December 26, 2011 by Nina

We arrived in Izamal, a beautiful yellow town, and had some icecream. We had the best tour of the church, all in Spanish (which none of us speak), so we did a lot of head nodding. After we built up an appetite, we asked a tourist police officer (not my idea!) for advice as to where to eat. He VERY excitedly lead us to a restaurant across the street, stopping traffic along the way. I was skeptical, but as it turns out it has been voted #6 in restaurants in Yucatan by Lonely Planet. And it actually was fantastic. One of my favorite meals on the trip. The Enchiladas were to die for.

  2. Zamas

    December 21, 2011 by Nina

By far my favorite hotel experience ever. If Cancun was the worst part of the trip, this was definitely the best. We took a sunrise walk and climbed on the cliffs behind the restaurant and had a terrific view of the waves crashing on the rocks. With our room located right near the beach, and the restaurant literally on the beach. Who doesn’t want to eat delicious tacos with their toes in the sand? And the food was good. Really good. The breakfast (Latte and Huevos Rancheros) was pretty disappointing though.

  3. Helado in Izamal

    December 19, 2011 by Nina

We finally had the wonderful ice cream that my dad has been talking about. We found a street vendor in Izamal that sold all sorts of fruity flavors. The best was Fresca (strawberry). The Mango Con Chile was not very good, but the Papaya was also great. Helado3 Helado in IzamalHelado2 Helado in Izamal

  4. Restaurante Temozon

    December 18, 2011 by Nina

On our way from Cancun to Tulum, we stopped in the first village we came to, Temozon, and ate at the only restaurant in town. It had two tables of white people, so I was skeptical, but when I realized that the server didn’t speak English I become hopeful that I was finally going to experience traditional Mexican cuisine. Julian and I had tamarind Juice and my dad had Lemonade. Both were entirely too sweet for my taste. I had Steak and Onions, and Julian had Guacamole (the only vegetarian thing on the menu). Again, the guacamole was amazingly fresh. My steak wasn’t cooked well, and was really tough, but the onions were so sweet and scrumptious. It came on a platter with beans, rice, and lettuce, which I sort of mixed together with the onions and that was good. After we were done the waiter gave us free Anais to drink. Even though it was horrible and we gave it to my mom when the waiter wasn’t looking, it reminded me that the people are just so nice.

  5. Hotel Imperial Las Perlas

    December 17, 2011 by Nina

We had a free buffet breakfast at the hotel, with the restaurant located on the water. You can have made-to-order Omelets, and there are good Plantains, fresh Papaya, and Salsa. The waiters were really nice, and super excited when I asked them where the bathroom was in Spanish.
