  1. Stuffed Artisan Cannolis

    January 2, 2012 by Nina

Julian had just been telling me about this new place for cannolis (this one) when we walked into the beautiful Christmas Market in Union Square. Although it cannot be compared to the wonder of the Christmas Markets in Germany, it was still a lot of fun. Of course, in the US you can’t drink in public, so the Glühwein is nonalcoholic and tastes like bad hot grape juice. But on to the Cannolis. We chose to try the Peanut Butter, Plain, and Chocolate Chocolate. They were all really good (I would say better than most), but still not as good as Lena’s, which are fresher because they are made-to-order. Still, I loved that they play around with fun flavors. Just like with the cupcake fad, Cannoli flavors have become really unique.

  2. Ramen Setagaya

    December 11, 2011 by Nina

Julian and I were in St. Mark’s trying to figure out where to eat, when we stumbled upon this place. We were the only white people inside (always a good sign). My meal had a Ramen, Egg, Tuna, and Seaweed. It was excellent, and very filling. I loved the wooden tables and TV with Ramen-making videos in Japanese.

  3. City Bakery

    December 9, 2011 by Nina

The City Bakery is celebrating its 20th anniversary, but you would never know. The decor is so modern that they must have had a serious renovation recently. Julian said they are famous for their Hot Chocolate, which comes with a homemade marshmallow and Pretzel Croissants. So naturally, we had one of each. I found that the hot chocolate was way to rich for me (we could only handle two sips each), and there is no way you could finish the whole mug without feeling sick. I noticed that you can order a shot (only the pros know this secret). I thought, Pretzel Croissants? Sounds kind of weird. SO GOOD. Genius, really. You have to try them.

  4. MoMA

    December 8, 2011 by Nina

When we were at MoMA we saw what looked like a construction site. There were people eating, so we thought perhaps it is an artistic experiment. There was a welcoming sign, so we decided to peak our heads inside. A man motioned to us to come in. The chef was really friendly and happy to give us a bowl of curry. It was the best exhibition I could imagine at a museum! The best part was the big fridge where you can help yourself to water. Still, Julian and I had some suggestions for improvement. First, the area should only be accessible from the floor below it, and second, the sign should say “Welcome” without any indication to what the staircase might be leading to. Third, there should be a communal table or pillows on the floor for seating.

  5. Paradis

    December 7, 2011 by Nina

When we go to New York City, we usually stay with his aunt and her husband in Chelsea. They happen to live at the Strand, which Paradis is right around the corner from. When she showed us the store, I was surprised to find that it is a cute little bakery. Somehow I imagined a much bigger chain, like Pret-A-Manger. They don’t cook for themselves and always have great pre-made food in the fridge that we are welcome to eat (a lot of it from Paradis). The first place I check is, of course, the freezer, where she always has gelato from Paradis. The Chocolate Gelato is to die for. It’s so dark, rich, and creamy.
