  1. Pete’s Famous Restaurant

    November 23, 2011 by Nina

I did not have high hopes for this diner-like restaurant. After waiting at Bread Alone for an hour for my friend to arrive, I was groaning by the time we walked in here. But boy was I wrong. I had one of the best milkshakes I’ve ever had. It was an extra thick Oreo one, and it also came with extra (that’s how you know it’s really good!). My salad was fresh, large, and satisfying. I felt like the value of my meal was high. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.

  3. Rhinebeck Farmer’s Market

    October 13, 2011 by Nina

The Rhinebeck farmer’s market was bustling when we got there, full of tourists and locals. Unlike the one in Saugerties, it is set up in a U-shape, so that you can pass through rather quickly. In Saugerties, it is set up around a middle section that has tables and a place for people to come and perform, a petting zoo, cooking station, etc. This gives it a completely different vibe (not locals chit-chatting). There are samples galore, from beer, cheese, apples, salsa, you name it. We were especially fond of the delicious cheese samples.

To eat, we went to Aba’s Falafel (the only option for a substantial meal). I thought $7 was a bit expensive for a falafel (I’m used to the street vendors of NYC). It’s the first time I’ve had a falafel sandwich with so much in it. It had cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, etc. I really enjoyed mine. Also, there are pickles, hot sauce, and mango curry that you can add for free! Yum!

  4. Arielle

    March 16, 2011 by Nina

My dad and I went to Arielle for their amazing lunch special: $12 for three course pre-fix. I ordered the Vegetable Soup and Penne with Chorizo and Peas, and my dad ordered the Vegetable Soup and Grilled Sardines. The sardines were whole which looked interesting, but was a bit difficult to eat, making it a try-once choice. Both of my dishes were wonderful, and the portions were perfect. For dessert, we shared both Crème brûlée and Pot de Crème. The Crème brûlée had a strong cardamom flavor, and a thicker crust than I am used to (and is not as good as by Café Tamayo), but the Pot de Crème was exquisite. For $12, this is an absolute steal.

Hint: The burger on the prix fixe is so worth it. It’s huge and delicious, and comes with a side salad and wonderful truffle fries.

  5. Terrapin Bistro

    March 2, 2011 by Nina

The Terrapin has been one of my favorite restaurants since I went there for Valentine’s Day three years ago. I’ve always enjoyed their tapas selection and meat options. However, when Julian and I went to the Bistro, we both left disappointed. We ordered the fries, a Goat Cheese and Mushroom Quesadilla, and Nachos. Now, I understand these aren’t exactly gourmet dishes, but we expected more. The nachos were okay, and the fries were as good as always (although I do find it strange they were put the plate with sauce on top so that the fries are squished), but the most disappointing thing was the quesadilla. I’ve had the duck and mango one and it’s excellent, so I thought this would be too, but it was awfully soggy (I can’t imagine why). I think perhaps the Bistro side isn’t as good as the menu, and would recommend the tapas and more expensive dinner entrees (and NEVER pasta).
