  1. Soul de Cuba

    August 24, 2011 by Nina

Some friends and I went here for dinner before seeing The Help and really enjoyed ourselves. I had the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef cooked with onions in a light tomato sauce served with arroz blanco, frijoles negros and platanos maduros), which was recommended to me by the waitress. It was so wonderful! The shredded beef was soft and tender, without fat (unlike with pulled pork) and the plantains were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It made a perfect meal.

  2. Thai Taste

    August 9, 2011 by Nina

When a friend came to visit, I took her to the “other best thai place in New Haven” (next to RED BAMBOO). When someone said to me that you have to walk downstairs to the restaurant, I was picturing a whole-in-the-wall place. But actually, this restaurant is far classier than most Thai restaurants I’ve been to. I was kind of dissapointed with my dish, but I felt like I just ordered the wrong thing (HOT BASIL: Sautéed with fresh minced hot pepper, basil leaves, mushrooms, green peppers, scallions and onions). I would like to go here again.

  3. Barcelona

    August 8, 2011 by Nina

Julian and I went out for a date night (which means we treat ourselves to an expensive restaurant) and decided to try this tapas restaurant. We went a little crazy and ordered way too much food. We ordered six tapas, in order from best to worst: Herbed Goat Cheese and Mushrooms in Balsamic Reduction, Chorizo with Sweet and Sour Figs in Balsamic-Sherry Glaze, Potato Tortilla with Chive Crème Fraiche, Papas Bravas in Spicy Tomato Sauce and Herb Aioli, Jicama-Cucumber Salad with Lime, Cayenne, and Sea Salt, and Spinach-Chickpea Casserole with Cumin & Garlic Confit. We also ordered the “Charcuteria,” which is a cheese and/or meat platter with: Idiazabal (Raw Sheep’s Milk, Hard, from the Basque Country) and San Simon (Birchwood Smoked Cow’s Milk, from Galicia) and the Jamon Serrano (Dry-cured Spanish Ham). It was a wonderful feast, but only go here if you’re looking to spend a lot!

  4. Heirloom

    August 7, 2011 by Nina

After going to Miya’s, Julian and I wanted to go somewhere special for dessert. We were searching for somewhere with a nice atmosphere when we stumbled upon Heirloom. Located inside a hotel, with glass windows looking out on the street, with comfy sofas in the window, we were intrigued. The hostess raved about their desserts, and she was not exaggerating. I ordered Panna Cotta, which normally I would not do because Cafe Tamayo has the best, but this one has rice crispies and blackberries with it, so I was interested. Julian ordered the Peach Donuts (which were actually Beignets) paired with both vanilla sauce and applesauce as dips. Both desserts were exceptional. We couldn’t decide which was better. It made for the perfect date night. Not to mention, the bathroom was one of the nicest I’ve ever been in (with it’s only competition being the one at the BMW Museum).

On our way to Rhode Island, my mom and I stopped here for brunch. I ate the Bananas Foster French Toast. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Well it was. It was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had. Yummmm.

  5. Caseus

    August 4, 2011 by Nina

I went here with a friend of mine, and it was a hot summer day and the only seats available were at the bar, so the restaurant was bound to be below my expectations. Because of the heat, I didn’t feel like ordering mac and cheese or grilled cheese (what I would instinctually order at a cheese shop restaurant) and instead ordered this tiny, crummy salad. The waiter looked at me and said, “is that all you’re having?” Of course I didn’t really understand what he meant (the salad is TINY), but he could have warned me without being obnoxious. I would have ordered something else (it costs $14!). The salad was called the FRISEE AUX DUCK (Frisee, over easy duck egg, duck carnitas, sancerre, poached potatoes, cabernet, vinegar). I understand there are some nice ingredients to this salad, but I suppose I was feeling cheap and should have ordered something else. I hope to be able to give this another try soon.
