  1. Miya’s

    July 5, 2011 by Nina

Here is one of those moments that I love-where I get to rant and rave about a restaurant. Hmm..where should I begin? My experience at Miya’s was easily one of my all-time favorites. The dimly-lit half of the restaurant that we were sitting in does not give off the impression of “best sushi ever,” but it is. The waiter hands you a menu that is the size of a book, and it’s almost difficult to figure out where the food is (page 18 and 30 for non-vegetarians and vegetarians, respectively). Why, the book? Because they describe every concept and ingredient in excruciatingly wonderful detail. I was so excited. We ordered the sampler because we just couldn’t choose. When it came–beautifully presented I might add–the waiter proceeded to tell us about each piece. Of course I couldn’t remember anything, so I asked him to write it down for me. We had, as follows: Best Crunchy, Oo La La, Tyger Tyger, Happy Together, Kraken, Hot Headed Cowgirl, Romping with Goats, Rabbibaba, and Mighty Mother Earth Roll.

Update: I have officially been here 5 times. All together, I have gotten the blue plate special all five times, the sushi dessert–a roll of banana, peanut butter, strawberries & chocolate – deep fried & topped with baby scoops of hand- churned rose petal ice cream (which is WONDERFUL)–twice, the Tokyo fro once, the salad twice, and the oktoberflöt (honey & hibiscus flower beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream) twice. The only time I was disappointed is unfortunately when I went with Julian. The blue plate special just does not live up when made vegetarian. I don’t know if it was just that I remember how delicious the sushi is when it has meat, or if it truly is not very good, but either way, that was a bummer. Still, one of the best restaurants of all time!

Hint: If you are 1) easily confused, 2) overwhelmed by menus, or 3) have trouble reading in restaurants, then it might be smart to view the menu online (as it is easier to understand) and know what you want before you get there!
